Charity is one of the shining stars who brightens everyone's day when she is working. She fills our definition of a nurse; kind, caring, patient advocate, and works hard to provide a safe and healing environment for her patients. Recently, stepping into a charge nurse position of our unit, she continues to provide these by providing support and guidance to all of the staff. She is able to fill the position of staff nurse, charge nurse, or stroke nurse with a smile and enthusiasm. Evidence of her dedication is witnessed daily; baking brownies, cookies, or cakes for both night and day shifts, staying over to respond as a "stroke nurse" to either help teach a new nurse the ropes of position or to allow the oncoming nurse to start out their shift on the unit, mentoring new graduate nurses and "floated" staff, bringing in gifts and surprises for patients, and giving positive and constructive feedback appropriately. Examples of her kindness include bringing a patient beans and rice from their favorite restaurant because the patient mentioned in rounding she was craving them (this was a cancer patient who was soon to be discharged to hospice), visiting a patient on the opposite side of the hall to speak to them in Spanish to them just to welcome them to the unit (yes, she is also bilingual), bring a patient a birthday card and gift (the smile on his face was priceless), sharing her lunch and snacks with staff who forgot their dinner. She also keeps an extra charging cord in her locker for anyone who would like to borrow it, places a piece of chocolate in exactly the right location so you find it midway through your shift, makes countless calls to doctors for her staff to help the "flow" of their work, and comes in extra to cover the floor or charge positions. There are so many examples I can't even name them! One quality I would like to review is how politely she addresses all of us when we could have done something better. Instead of saying "you made a mistake," she says "I had the same problem you did one day and here is how I fixed it" or "I have a suggestion of how to do that next time. Can I share my idea with you now?" She is approachable, accessible, adaptable, and accountable. She is our go-to girl, our A-team leader, our Charity!
