I have the pleasure of working with Celine since she started as a new nurse on John Sealy 6B. Even then she already showed great compassion towards her patients that is the reason why when this incident happened, I was not surprised at all.
We had a patient in the unit that was well known for being grumpy and difficult. But on that particular day, Mr. X was noticeably quiet and depressed. Celine asked the patient if something was wrong and if there was anything she could do for him. Mr. X claimed that the following day was his 35th wedding anniversary and that same day he was scheduled for BKA. Upon hearing this, Celine immediately got ahold of the wife on the phone and explained to her what's going on and Celine asked the family if they could come to visit the patient before the scheduled amputation. The family said they will and Celine transferred the call to the patient's room. Two days after the BKA, Celine was Mr. X's nurse again. This time, Celine learned that it was Mr. X's birthday. Celine wanted to do something nice for Mr. X. Celine got him a birthday balloon and a healthy snack from the gift shop using her own money. Then Celine gathered all the nurses and PCTs and went to Mr. X's room and sang Happy Birthday, which brought tears to his eyes. She also made a birthday banner and a sign outside the room saying, "It's Mr. X's birthday today! Don't forget to greet him." So, every single person that entered the room, from the doctors to the housekeeper, all greeted the patient on his special day which definitely made his day and made him feel so special. The next day was my turn to take care of Mr. X; having observed all the special things that Celine did to the patient and the happiness it brought to Mr. X, I wanted to do something nice for him too. So, with the PCT's help, we put Mr. X into the chair and wheeled him outside to see the beautiful Galveston Bay. Mr. X enjoyed the view for so long that even the medical teams would sit with him and chat. After a while, Mr. X called me, and with a smile said, "Honey, please wheel me back to my room. I'm tired. I want to rest". A week later, Mr. X passed away. With Celine's initiative, I'm sure Mr. X passed away happy. Celine, thank you for all that you did for Mr. X.
