I am a nurse and I have had the pleasure of working with some truly superb nurses over my career. I have never been touched as personally as I was by the heartfelt gesture that Casey showed my mother during her stay at VMC.
My mother was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and was being worked up to have a TAVR procedure. She told her physician that she was willing to have the procedure done, but not until after her granddaughter's wedding; she was not willing to take the chance of anything happening to spoil her granddaughter's day. Well that wasn't the way things worked out. She had a heart attack and was admitted to CICU. She had exceptional care from every team member that she encountered on the unit, but there were a few nurses that she really bonded with.
During her stay on CICU, Casey was her nurse for two shifts. In conversation, she told Casey how sad she was that she wouldn't be able to attend the wedding. The day before the wedding we talked about FaceTiming the ceremony so at least she would be able to see it. My mother was transferred to CIU late Friday night. She was concerned that she would forget how to do FaceTime, and since the staff on CIU was new to her she was unsure that they would be willing to help her. We practiced several times during that day and on Saturday her nurse assured her that she would make sure that she answered the call to get on FaceTime to see the ceremony.
My mother got on FaceTime without a hitch. My son volunteered to stay on the call with my mother, so I didn't know until after the ceremony what had transpired. Casey came to my mother's room on her day off. She brought my mother a corsage to wear during the ceremony - making her feel a part of the wedding and held her hand so she wasn't alone. She also brought my mother Chili and Italian Bread as a treat because she knew from their conversations that these were some of the foods my mother was craving, and she wanted to make the day special for her. This simple act of kindness by Casey touched my heart and the hearts of my entire family.
Thank you, Casey, for not only being such a special nurse but for being such a special person with a tremendous heart. My family will never forget your kindness. CICU is lucky to have you on their team. Thank you, Casey, for making the day so special for my mother.
