My 84-year-old mother had fractured her hip and kneecap and was in tremendous pain. She had surgery a day after she was admitted. She has expressive aphasia and was in pain, so she was scared and had a difficult time managing her pain and communicating.
Casey went above and beyond to show and care for my mother. She was always one step ahead of providing for her needs. Shaking in pain, she paged the doctor even before being asked by the family. She would bring in additional pillows to try to reposition her. Check on her pain level before the medications were due to ensure they were given on time. If the call button was pushed and Casey was busy, she would stop in and let her know what the status was regarding her request. Casey was on the constant move but never made my mother feel rushed when she was with her.
Family members (son and four daughters) were coming and going - Casey had extreme patience in reviewing status and answering questions regarding my mother's care. Casey was able to assist my mother in relaxing as she had leg spasms, with a compassionate approach. My mother is DNR, but Casey made her feel like her comfort and care mattered. Casey supported the family with compassion as well. Making calls to ensure specialists understood our time constraints, paging doctors if we missed them on rounds, etc.
Casey was an angel in a very dark time; her compassion, problem-solving skills, anticipatory skills, communication skills, demeanor, and genuine thoughtfulness made our challenging days easier - she is truly a special person.
