Carrie Decker, RN from Unit 51/52 was assigned to a 50 year old patient who had chronic illnesses and was the youngest of 5 sisters. While this patient was in the hospital this time, she found out that her oldest sister had died unexpectedly while out of town on a business trip. Carrie was proactive in calling the chaplain’s office to arrange for someone to come up and support the patient but also came to me and said she wanted to do more and felt so bad because every time she went into the patient’s room, the patient was crying. She asked if it was "OK" if she got her a flower arrangement and card from the gift shop as a token of our sympathy. She went downstairs, found a beautiful feminine flower arrangement and sympathy card and used this to further express sympathy over the patient’s sister’s death and to convey how concerned we were for the patient. She then called the chaplain’s office back and requested they do follow up visits with the patient. Carrie offered to help the patient make phone calls and was just there to support her in this difficult time. This is anexample of the compassionate care that Carrie Decker delivers every day.
