Our DAISY Nurse, Carolyn Brewer-Dube was not only nominated by a co-worker, but by an external Case Management Services as well. Both nominations exemplify the criteria for being selected as a DAISY, such as Compassion, Patient and Family Focused Care, Patient Advocacy, Serving as a Role Model to the Nursing Profession, Critical Thinking Skills, Support of members of the Healthcare Team, and lastly, but just as important, an extreme passion for life.

In October, 2012, when a call from the wife of an oncology patient came into Urgent Care in the evening, Carolyn was working and took the call; the wife stated that the patient's chemotherapy pump was leaking. Since the patient was well known to the Oncology clinic staff, the patient and his wife were told to come in to Oncology, and she contacted Dr. B, who ordered a new pump; this was done, and it was confirmed that the pump would be delivered around 10 PM that night. So, after working in the Oncology Clinic all day, and working in Urgent Care until 9 PM, Carolyn went home, changed into "comfy clothes" and went to the patient's home to attach the new pump so that the patient would not need to wait until morning for that to happen. This was an example of going "above and beyond."

Summit Case Management Services provides comprehensive and personalized services to their clients based on their findings through patient chart reviews and staff communication. While reviewing a patient's case, the Certified Medical Case Manager for Summit noted and commended Carolyn for her astute critical thinking skills, writing, "Carolyn identified a life threatening subclavian blood clot while changing this patient's dressing. She measured both of his arms and identified a disparity in the circumference. This had been missed by other providers, despite the patient's complaints of discomfort. Her attention to detail and medical assessment likely resulted in saving a life. She is clearly an asset to you staff."

It is truly an honor to have Carolyn on the Nursing staff here at Bridgton Hospital, not only for her versatility in working in various outpatient areas as well as assisting on the Inpatient Unit, but for her lighthearted yet compassionate and thoughtful approach to patient care.
