My daughter J and I would love to recognize Caroline Myers. J came to the Emergency Department and was discharged two days later. This was her first hospital stay and she was extremely nervous.
Because I am a nurse, I did expect high quality of care for my daughter, but Caroline was not aware I was a nurse. This is how I know her treatment of J was typical of how she treats all of her patients. I have listed the things that Caroline did that made her quality of care exceptional!
J was very nervous and would have panic attacks due to her vocal cords having spasms. When J was having these attacks, Caroline was a strong voice telling J she was safe and helping her get through the attack. Giving J a focus point helped the attack from getting worse.
J was very sensitive to her IV and Caroline helped by offering her ways to make the pain less and still made sure she realized how important it was to have an IV in.
Caroline made sure I was also comfortable and took the time to explain things to me in terms a family member without my nursing experience would know.
Upon discharge, she went through the discharge thoroughly. As a nurse familiar with hospital discharges, I know this is often overlooked and rushed through. She did a great job of taking her time and making sure, we knew what to do. She also did not make us sit and wait a long time after the physician stated we would be discharged, also often seen in the hospital.
Caroline made our experience at St. Joe's great and although we were glad to leave, Caroline made a lasting impression on my daughter. For that, I am thankful. Due to J's age, she doesn't listen to or believe most of what I say. Caroline would tell her the same thing that I have told her but my daughter believed her. Now when she has an attack, I can say, "Remember what Caroline told you?"
I have worked with many nurses and have had the privilege to work with some great nurses. Caroline falls into the GREAT category. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
