During the night shift, we had a patient arrive from assisted living via ambulance in respiratory distress. When the patient arrived, he was not doing well. The patient had an advanced directive stating DNR/DNI, no IV fluids, antibiotics, etc., and it became increasingly clear that the patient was not going to make it. I spoke with the patient's family over the phone. His POA, who lives in Florida, told me he has a brother in Seattle and the rest of the family was in Iowa. There was no family or friends to call to come in to be with the patient. After getting off the phone, I walked over to the patient's room and both Caroline Houbein and Beba Kajdic were sitting at the patient's bedside, holding his hands. It was an incredibly touching moment and I was honored to help care for the other patients in the department so that both of them could stay at his bedside. This patient passed away within about 30 minutes, but he was not alone, and he passed peacefully. Our nurses are incredible, and I was proud to be part of the team that provided this level of care.
