As a first-time father (to-be, at the time), having Carla has our nurse during labor and delivery (and recovery) was extraordinary and helped ease any worries I had been having. And for the mother, she was exemplary as well. Her compassion, knowledge, level of care and bedside manner were beyond my (and my wife's) wildest expectations. I was born in Minnesota and grew up using a different healthcare system so I haven't had much interaction with other healthcare providers. In choosing Baptist and going into this I was a little nervous, unsure, and a bit unsettled on the facilities, level of care, and provider knowledge. Boy, was I wrong. I had nothing to worry about - Carla (and the entire L/D team) were kind, caring, and just had a way to put stress at bay. They essentially had all of the qualities you want in a Nurse/Dr/Unit - both scholastically/scientifically, as well as those personal traits that aren't measurable. The entire LD and Maternity units on Floor 2 and 3, as well as our doctor most definitely have them. Special people indeed. I was blown away by the entire birth of our little daughter, the team that helped, my wonderful wife and the entire experience. Well done Baptist, I've already recommended you to numerous friends and colleagues.
A few situations that stick out in my mind as it relates to Carla: 1) After my wife was on Pitocin for a few hours, post-epidural, she felt an immediate sense of nausea, her BP dropped, baby was getting agitated, and my wife got the chills (out of nowhere). We called Carla, she came in and immediately got things under control. Put on the O2, stopped the Pitocin, and upped the fluids to stabilize my wife. She called for another nurse and they both were able to stabilize, monitor, and give great care to my wife. It was a bit scary, but with Carla and the team on-hand, I knew we were in great hands. 2) From the laboring room, to the OR, to recovery, you could tell Carla was extremely smart, knowledgeable, funny, caring, and has a good heart. Being a nurse is hard work, especially when helping bring life into this world. I'll never forget my experience at Baptist when my wife delivered our new baby girl, and Carla was such a huge part of that I'll never forget her either. Thank you, Carla! Keep doing great things!
