I would like to nominate A. Bronwyn Gilliam for the DAISY award this month. Bronwyn has been with us since opening & consistently demonstrates compassion above & beyond her role as a bedside nurse. Her compassion is evident in the tasks she identifies & completes while she is caring for her patients. Example 1: A few months ago a pt came into the hospital in liver failure. The pt needed a transplant. The MD managing the pt did not want to transfer the pt to a transplant facility because it was the 'weekend'. Bronwyn called another member of the pt's interdisciplinary team and pleaded her case for the pt. The other doctor made the transfer happen, when the primary did not. Two weeks ago, the pt and his wife came back to personally thank Bronwyn for what she had done…for going the extra mile. The pt and family reported that the pt transferred to San Antonio and was immediately placed on the transplant list. The pt received a liver transplant after being on the list for two weeks. During the two weeks he was quite ill and MD's were not sure he was going to make it. But he did and he wanted to personally thank Bronwyn for what she did. Example 2: A younger pt with asthma came in to our facility quite ill and required intubation. During the time he was in the hospital, his grandmother who raised him had a sudden MI and passed away. The pt was ill and required re-intubation after extubation and an extended stay. When he was told of his grandmother's passing, he wanted to leave to attend the funeral. Bronwyn spoke to him and made him understand the severity of his illness and the potential for further complications if he left AMA. Bronwyn told the pt there might be something else we can do. She contacted IS and tried to see if we can SKYPE the funeral for the pt to watch. IS was unable to get SKYPE working. Bronwyn gave her personal cell phone, downloaded the application and another family member at the service had a phone and the pt was able to attend the service for his beloved grandmother because Bronwyn thought of to use her cell phone for this pt. That afternoon the pt's mom came to the hospital, hugged Bronwyn as the same time she was crying for what she had thought of doing and what she actually did for her son and the family.
