We had a 54 YO homeless man who was admitted as a trauma. He was a pedestrian who was hit by a fast moving car, and sustained multiple severe injuries (including a horribly broken humerus, a brain bleed, and a tibial fracture that had quickly turned into compartment syndrome). The patient arrived to the ED, and was emergently taken to the OR for his injuries. When the patient awoke the next day, the first thing he mentioned was that he was scared he would lose his job at Wendy's because he hadn't shown up for work yesterday. Brittany, his nurse, took the time to ask him which Wendy's location he worked at, and somehow contacted the patient's manager to let her know he had been in a serious car accident and would not be able to come to work. The manager assured Brittany that they would hold his job for him while he was in the hospital, and thanked her for taking the time out to call her.
Brittany constantly goes above and beyond for her patients, not because it is "good customer service", but simply because that is the kind of amazing person that she is. Her kind and generous heart is felt by every single one of her patients—especially an extremely thankful homeless man who will now still be employed because of Brittany's sweet spirit.
