Thanks to the care of the network of doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt, I am a cancer survivor. I had major surgery (11 hours) to remove a mass of colorectal cancer from the lower portion of my lower intestines. After two weeks in stepdown ICU and two weeks at Stallworth, I came home to recover there. Months later, I was well enough to begin a regimen of FOLFOX. It was at that point in my care that I met Brigitte. Although I had 'survived' chemo and radiation prior to surgery, I was still apprehensive about beginning chemo, given all I had heard about debilitating side effects that others had experienced. Brigitte greeted my wife and me with sincere heartfelt warmth. In addition to soliciting and addressing all our technical questions, she initiated a genuine relationship with us. In subsequent visits to the infusion clinic, I received care from several nurses. Although the care was always good, it couldn't stack up to Brigitte's attention to detail and compassion. Now, I always ask for Brigitte to attend to me when I go to the clinic. Brigitte starts every session with me by sitting down and asking how I'm doing, how were the side effects from the previous infusion, did the oncologist say anything she should know about, is there anything she can do to help and how is my wife. During the course of the infusion, she intermittently draws me out into conversation about my family life and hers. Brigitte's care is a calling, far beyond a job. When I go to the Infusion Clinic, I am going to reconnect with a friend as well as receiving excellent care. When I'm healthy enough to do so, I will return to my work in architecture. Brigitte is a role model for me in client service.
