Brett always goes above and beyond to get to know his patients and their families, which is remarkable given the fast pace of the ER. Brett is incredibly compassionate and empathetic, and treats patients as he would want his family members to be treated, especially when they face tough situations such as end of life care decisions and critical illness. Patients often come back months later and request him to be their nurse, which speaks volumes of the type of care he provides.

For example, recently Brett accompanied a patient from the ED to his assigned room on PCU and continued to sit with the patient until the patient's wife returned to the hospital. He remained there with him for at least two hours, off the clock, and only did so because he had promised the wife he would stay until she could get back. The patient was not confused nor a safety risk; Brett just did it because the family is comfortable with him and knew he would make sure things were ok until she got back! The patient and his wife were so appreciative!
