Brandi continually goes above & beyond for her patients. She mentors & coaches new employees and senior nursing students. She often displays critical thinking skills.
Recently her patient’s PTT came back in the am >100. Upon review, she noted that the patient had been therapeutic on a Heparin drip for several days. She became alert that perhaps the specimen had not been draw correctly by the previous RN from a central line with heparin infusion. She re-drew the specimen and the PTT was therapeutic. Why is this significant? The patient had a number of blood clots, hence the heparin drip. If Brandi had turned off the heparin for 2 hours then decreased the rate of the heparin, the patient may have been compromised. Brandi relayed the information to me, allowing me to re-educate all nurses on how to correctly draw blood from a central line with heparin infusing continuously.
Brandy displays this type of critical thinking often. She strives to provide the best quality of care possible to her patients and trains new nurses to do the same.
