Bobbie is a nurse who takes her patients and their families into her heart like her own family. Not only does she provide them with the best possible care while they are in the ICU, but follows up on them and checks in on them throughout their hospitalization.
One such patient was an elderly lady that had a very complicated course following surgery. The patient had become depressed as she was very active in her church choir and loved music, but she was anxious at having to get a tracheostomy during her recovery. Bobbie was soothing and kind to her patient and spent countless hours ensuring she was kept in good spirits. She arranged for her to have her keyboard brought into her room. Soon the ICU room looked more like a comfortable bungalow as the patient was surrounded with her own things and was enjoying playing her keyboard.
The patient recovered and has come back to visit, singing joyfully in her choir once again after a 90+ day stay in the ICU. I attribute her success largely to the simple power of kindness and how Bobbie spent time encouraging her to have hope. Bobbie still gets updates on this patient as she has stayed in contact. She is a powerful reminder to all of us what nursing is all about.
