During Lakeland's Sun and Fun celebration, Blair left with the Polk County "Flight to Honor" to Washington DC. This one day trip is sponsored by the Polk County Veterans Council; the mission is to fly veterans at no cost, to visit memorials erected in their honor, with priority given to World War II, Korean, and Vietnam War Veterans. Blair went as a guardian for an 80+ year old veteran with health concerns. She self-funded her trip using her own leave. Blair contacted the veteran prior to the trip to discuss his background, and pertinent medical issues. She picked him up from home and brought him to the airport.
The veterans and accompanying guardians toured Washington D. C. and monuments via bus. During the tour, Blair noticed that her veteran had spent a longer than usual time in the bus bathroom. When she knocked on the bathroom door, he sounded disoriented. After opening the door, Blair found him slumped against the wall. Using her own personal BP monitor and stethoscope, she quickly assessed him. He became unresponsive and Blair notified 911 via her cell phone. Blair remained with the veteran, who was transported to a local hospital, giving valuable medical information to the medical staff. He was admitted to the hospital with hypoglycemia and urinary tract infection. Blair left the hospital, only after another guardian was able to stay in Washington. Blair brought home the veteran's belongings, returning them to him upon his discharge and return home. The only regret was that he missed seeing Arlington National Cemetery.
