I have been working with BihYann for the last 3.5 years. There is not a night when she has not helped her unit nurses. She is the best Charge Nurse that I've ever known. This column is not big enough if I start counting her excellent judgments to save patients' lives.
Recently, we had a 99-year-old female, confused on our unit who was very impulsive, combative, and agitated with many staff members. This patient refused to wear a tele box. The family was not responding to our calls. We were about to call code gray on this patient for her behavior. Bih educated the staff that Haldol will be ordered on this patient and she might get more irritated with a staff member who will sit next to her as a sitter to avoid falls. Bih talked to the patient in her language. The patient told her that she is scared; Bih's therapeutic talk and touch avoided the code.
Bih went above and beyond basic nursing actions to calm the patient down, made her food, and pulled some Chinese drama on the phone for the patient to watch that overnight. Bih became the unofficial sitter for that patient for 10-12 hours while doing her charge nurse duties and helping her unit nurses. I found out that this patient did have prolonged QTCs, giving her Haldol may have caused harm. BihYann's action was truly appreciated.
