My mother was admitted for a blood clot in her lung. Bethany was our day nurse for three of the six days we were inpatient. She was compassionate, consistent, and very knowledgeable. She was patient with my mother, whose mobility is almost non-existent and whose mental status varies from minute to minute. She would always speak directly to Mom first and then to us secondary. Being a nurse myself, she would converse with me on one level but always make sure she also explained to my Mom and Dad on a level they understood. She took the time to allow my Dad to give the Lovenox injections under her supervision so he felt comfortable to administer them once discharged. Discharge being delayed due to the need for IV antibiotics, she made sure all discharge prep was done so that we could leave as soon as possible after her last IV medication. Most of all, she not only treated my mother, she also looked after me and my father.

Seeing I was getting to my limit, she encouraged me to take a break and leave the room for a little while. Knowing I was concerned about Mom getting out of the bed without calling, she recommended putting the bed alarm on and leaving the door open so she could hear if she got up. It made me comfortable to leave her. She also communicated with the doctor's office regarding post discharge tests which could have been pushed to a discharge planner. Mom was on isolation, and she never entered the room without the appropriate isolation equipment in place and alcoholed in and out at each visit.

My standards of nursing are high, and Bethany exceeded every one. She deserves to be recognized for her exceptional care.
