Bernadette was nominated by a peer, as told to her by this patients' daughter.
I truly appreciate all you are doing to care for my mother with thoughtful compassion. Her aggressive hitting and kicking at staff earlier I understand required soft wrist and ankle ties and a shot of a relaxant. What I especially want to recognize is how you didn't just leave her for hours. You removed the ties once she was settled. More than that you took a personal interest in my mother. You allowed her to get up to the bathroom since she's strong and steady. You just stood by and helped with the pad change as needed. And, what touched me and thrilled my mom is how you put YouTube on her TV. You knew she was an opera singer from early adulthood. This meant so much to my mom.
This has been such a trying time for mom. She's become violent unpredictably in the past year after a head injury. We are trying to find placement where she can be safe. Moving is very scary for mom. We came to MH from trying to admit her to Cherry Park Memory Care but her aggressive behaviors on admission there were more than they could manage so they called an ambulance to bring her to Mt. Hood Medical Center. Bernadette, your respect for my mom, your instructing your team of nurses and aides to allow her to be up safely when she was staying close to her room helped mom not feel trapped.
All you have done to balance keeping your staff safe while also letting mom be somewhat independent and mobile helps her feel more self-control and helps me feel relaxed when I visit. You are an exceptional nurse and I want you to know this.
Note: This is Bernadette's 2nd DAISY Award!
