Benjamin has always delivered compassionate care and gone the second mile for all of his patients; especially those who can be difficult to care for. An example of this was during a busy day shift when he was charge nurse, juggling a five patient assignment, and precepting a new nurse. During this shift, he was also busy completing a complicated discharge for a patient who had been at the hospital for a long time. After completing the patient's discharge and sending her home with their family, the patient's disgruntled family member called the unit upset about the price of one of the patient's prescriptions. Benjamin explained to the patient that it was not within his ability to adjust the price of the prescription but directed the call to the appropriate department. The patient's family member called back again after speaking to the appropriate department because they were still unsatisfied with the price of the prescription. During a lengthy phone call while the patient's family member raised their voice, verbally lashed out, and expressed their irritation, this nurse remained calm and did everything in his power to direct the family member to find the appropriate way for this person to find a solution. After many phone calls with this angry family member while also caring for his 5 patients and teaching a new nurse, Ben called the pharmacy and anonymously paid for the prescription out of his own pocket. This is just one example of how Ben goes the extra mile for patients without expecting anything in return. The patient's family had been rude irrational and unappreciative of the help Ben had provided, yet Ben showed compassion and personally helped this person put an end to their stress all while knowing he would never receive a "thank you." Ben is a true DAISY Nurse.
