Barbara Gonzalez has impeccably modeled the role and image of an extraordinary nurse, in a manner in which makes her peers and colleagues proud, yet humbly inspired to imitate her professional caliber. She demonstrates both a humanistic and professional approach in her clinical practice, through her caring and compassionate spirit, integrity, and positive communication with patients, family, and professional peers.

Barbara exhibits the professional confidence in her knowledge base, clinical techniques, nursing practice, and communication skills that instills trust and hope in her patients, families and teammates when coping with the stress of a hectic work environment. She exhibits the fundamental values and components of caring and compassion outlined in Jean Watson's Caring Theory, which affirms that nursing is more than just a job, but a selfless giving and self-less receiving holistic experience that has the power to transform self, others, and the institution. Over the years, she has received numerous letters of gratitude from patients and families regarding their positive hospital experience under her care in the PACU. Physicians trust her expertise and morale when caring for their patients. Her nursing peers would concur that she treats everyone with respect and is wholly empathetic to the concerns and issues of the PACU. When faced with challenging situations and conflict, she remains dignified, respectful, and just in her attitude and behavior.

Barbara's laudable merit and integrity extends beyond her clinical practice. Her professionalism, positive attitude, and admirable leadership qualities is why I chose her to be the facilitator of the Perianesthesia Quality Improvement Team, a role that encompasses considerable responsibility and commitment to improving the nursing practice.

She attained her professional board certification in perianesthesia nursing after nearly thirty years of service as a clinical nurse in the PACU! Barbara has effectively functioned in the leadership role of charge nurse, preceptor, educator, advocate, counselor, and change agent.
