Barbara was caring for a patient with metastatic cancer that had declined during her stay at CHS-Lincoln. The patient had chosen not pursue any further treatments and to go home with Hospice care. The patient's daughter was pregnant with her first grandchild. The daughter had an ultrasound coming up in a few weeks to find out the sex of the baby. The patient, being so sick, was afraid she would not make it to meet her grandchild and maybe not even make it to see the sex the of her first grandchild. Barbara saw the anguish and turmoil in the patient's face, thoughts, and words and took it upon herself to contact the patient's daughter's OB in Winston-Salem to get an order for an ultrasound. She then talked our ultrasound department into coming up to the room and performing the ultrasound on the daughter so the patient could experience with the daughter the finding out of the sex of the baby. The baby was a boy!!

The patient and family were so grateful for this moment that they all were able to share together. Barbara definitely went the extra mile that day! This is a true example of how Barbara cares for not only her patients but for the families of her patients.
