My dad is a typical Vietnam-era veteran with exposure to Agent Orange, multiple co-morbid conditions and he can sometimes be challenging. My father has been coming to the VA for several years and has encountered multiple medical providers at the VA over the years. My dad always says his care is good but has never really had much to say about it until a recent appointment. He came home from that appointment so impressed by the care and treatment Ashley provided that he asked her to write her name on his medical reconciliation form so that he could recommend her for an award. He gave me her name, knowing I work here to ensure that she gets the recognition deserved. He has been calling me non-stop to ask if I have completed the nomination.
When I asked my dad for the specifics, why is she so good? He just went on and on about her care and compassion. He stated, "she is always cheerful and happy." The thing that stuck out most to me was that he went on to say, "She examined my feet! She even touched the ugly things without squirming!" He went on to say, "...she was very respectful, compassionate, and gentle with me..."
My father had another appointment to have stitches removed from his forehead. Ashley cared for my dad and again that night I received a call asking if I had submitted this form! My mom attended the appointment with my dad and she also stated that Ashley goes above and beyond compared to other staff members they have encountered. Ashley truly enjoys her job and it shows in the care and treatment she provides to the Veterans.
By far, hands down, Ashley has been the most compassionate and caring of the providers my dad and mom have encountered. For my parents to be so persistent about completing this nomination, it is a testament alone to her demonstration of the ICARE principles.
