We recently had a tragic situation in the MICU. A young woman was rushed to our hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. Prior to being brought to Upstate, the patient underwent an emergent C-section to try to save the life of her unborn baby. The baby did not survive, and it was quickly suspected that the patient herself was brain dead. AJ (Arlee Logan) was the patient's nurse for 2 days. He was professional, kind, and compassionate to the patient and the family the entire time he was on his shift. It was evident that his kindness and respect helped the family understand and cope with this unexpected and devastating situation. After completing the brain death testing, AJ even elected to stay after his shift had ended so that the family would not have to adapt to a new nurse coming on service during their loved one's last moments. This was a moving gesture that AJ did not have to do. AJ has only been a nurse for approximately 6 months. He handled this situation in a mature, caring way that many seasoned nurses would not be able to do. Thank you, AJ, for showing our patients and their families the above and beyond support they need during unexpected medical emergencies.
