Last week was a tough week for the MICU. We had a young, 25-year-old patient who was admitted at 16 weeks pregnant. The patient was diagnosed with an intrauterine infection and the decision was made by the OB-GYN to induce labor and deliver a nonviable fetus. This, understandably, was a terribly difficult situation not only for the patient but also for all of the nurses working in 4A that day. Deliveries are not a common occurrence in our ICU and our staff definitely felt the pressure and ominous, inevitable outcome of this situation, one that escalated very quickly and before our staff knew it, they were facing what they had dreaded all morning. This did not deter a single nurse from taking excellent care of the patient and coming together as a team to work through one of the most emotionally difficult days we've seen in a while. April Hazelwood, one of our exceptional dedicated Charge Nurses, was doing charge in 4A that day and she displayed such strong leadership abilities, compassion towards the patient and emotional support to her staff nurses, that I would feel remorse if I didn't do my due diligence to make sure she was recognized for going above and beyond her call of duty. April was actually in the room with the patient while she was laboring and delivered the baby herself. April provided the patient incredible emotional support and met her physical needs. She stayed calm and in control during a time that changed very rapidly, all while managing the unit and other patient needs. I am certain that this shift would not have gone as smoothly had April not been assigned as Charge Nurse that day. She was absolutely in the place she was meant to be that day. Because of her, not only did our patient feel supported, safe and cared for, our staff did as well, something I value with equal importance on a day like that day. Thank you, April, for going above and beyond your call of duty as a nurse. Your dedication and experience are valued and appreciated in the MICU.
