I would like to recognize Andrea Bright for her outstanding care and compassion to our patient K. K was a difficult patient to care for. She was on our unit for about 44 days. What made it so difficult to care for her was that she didn't seem to listen to what we told her to do. While on the ventilator she would throw her legs off the bed, she would scoot her butt so far down in the bed that we would have to pull her up at the very least every 2 hours, and to get our attention she would either hit the side rails or she would kick the footboard (she actually broke the footboard). Staff was getting exhausted, and you would often hear "K stop doing that, K you have to stay in the bed" coming from her room. After a very long night of caring for K, Andrea went to the ICU PCU leadership and told them something has to be done. We aren't helping her and she isn't getting any better with us just going into her room and telling her to stop. Andrea made it her mission to help K. Using a pen and paper she got K to be able to write down her needs that she couldn't verbalize. She stopped K from hitting the side rail or kicking the footboard by giving her a soft touch call light. Andrea took the time to sit and listen to her. With the excellent work that Andrea did for K, leadership was able to develop a plan of care for her and after we all were doing what Andrea was doing for K, she was discharged to rehab. On her last night here at West, K was very anxious and her biggest request was Andrea's presence.
