On Sunday June 27, 2010, Donna was assigned to take care of a dying patient. Around 11pm, Donna’s patient began to decline more quickly. She attempted to contact a family member to come to the hospital to be with the patient as she passed away, but was unable to get anyone that was able to come. She stayed with the patient for about an hour, comforting her, holding her hand, and speaking to her about Jesus and letting the patient know it was ok to let go. During this time, Amy, who was not assigned to the patient, also sat at her bedside and spoke kind words to the patient and did not leave until the she had passed away. Amy stayed with a patient that was unassigned to her for a little more than an hour so that she did not die alone. The patient passed away without her family, but she was certainly not alone. I wept tears because I was so touched by the compassion these two nurses showed this patient. They exemplify what nursing is all about and that is why I am nominating these two amazing ladies for the DAISY Award.
