At 22 weeks pregnant, I came to St. Vincent. It was during those first few weeks that I met Amy. I really had no idea what a perinatal nurse navigator was, but I could tell that she had a good medical knowledge and she had a personality that made me feel comfortable and safe to share my nervousness about the future. As I got to know her, I learned that she was there to help us through the first stage of our baby's heart journey, and it was clear to me that she was the perfect person to do so. She's down to earth and made me feel well cared for from the beginning. When I shared with her how my previous C-section had made me so anxious after my spinal she told me immediately that she would scrub into the surgery to hold my hand until my husband could join me. Not only did Amy scrub in that day, she came ahead of time and sat with us as we prepared for surgery, she held my hand for the spinal, and she brought a camera to make a CD of pictures that she took during the C-section. After that, I continued to see Amy throughout our ten-week stay at the NICU. She left messages on our board and came to visit when I was with our daughter. Amy went above and beyond to care for my husband, daughter (and sons!), and me. And the more I have gotten to know Amy, the more I can see that this isn't just something she did for me, it's something she does for everyone. She has been the greatest part of our St. Vincent Journey because from the beginning she made me feel like I wasn't alone and that my baby was going to get the best care possible. She made it possible for the journey to feel smooth from appointment to appointment. Amy Spenner made a very scary time for our family feel less so, and I can never thank her enough.
