In July, my husband was assigned a room for fever, dehydration and possible infection as a result of his pancreatic cancer chemotherapy treatment. Our nurse, Amy, greeted us with love, compassion and professionalism as she nursed both of us by cheerfully and carefully speaking to us both in a clear, explanatory manner as constant changes occurred.
Patience, kindness and a calming demeanor were always present in her as she answered and satisfactorily addressed all my concerns. A particular example of the healing Christian mission occurred when my husband's blood pressure became very low. Amy made certain that my husband and I were not alone as she immediately sought consultation with the unit manager. They resolved the problem with the attending physician with a team plan to monitor my husband's pressure every 2 hours with increased fluids and antibiotics. What I appreciate most was that Amy made me feel part of the medical team with her kind, calm, smiling explanation at all times.
Her reassurances to me and my husband in handling an intravenous problem made me truly feel like the Psalm, "I am always with you. You are not alone." When I told our nurse how peaceful and assured I felt, I truly realized the purpose of the Adventist Health System promise of promoting Healing through Christ's Ministry. She replied very simply, "I try to help my patient's medically and with Christ's help." Amy is truly a blessing to all.
