Recently I was a patient on the Senior Specialty Unit (5 South). The first bedside nurse I met that I remember was Amrit. During the evening and night she demonstrated a high level of clinical excellence in all aspects of my care. The IV's never ran out, she double checked the new bags to make sure they were correct. My ID band was then checked, each and every time. The same level of excellence with each and every time any medicine was given. She always checked my bandage for any drainage and legs for edema and circulation. She acted as my advocate at all times.

Every time she came into my room she asked how I was feeling, was I in pain, did I need or want anything. She always saw that every want and need was met in a timely fashion. She called the surgeon after his rounds to ask him about ice chips and a liquid diet at my request. I could see that she directed her team of nurses and nursing assistants in a very professional manner. All showed respect for her and what she asked them to do for me. I even asked a few of the assistants what it was like to work for her and all asked, had nothing but good things to say about her and how they were treated by her. Each time she touched me carrying out her duties I could feel her empathy for me in her touch and the expression on her face. Each time she came to my bedside her facial expression was the same and she always grasp the side rail like she wanted to put her hand on mine to express her compassion for me as I was suffering with pain and a new diagnosis of cancer.
