A patient was in the ER with fever, hip pain and large wound with a wound vac. The physician removed the wound vac to assess the wound. The patient was a paraplegic and home health patient. They had assessed the wound that morning also. After the wound vac was removed, I called the floor and Amber came right down to help. She brought all the supplies and also had taken care of the patient just weeks before. When she assessed the wound, she noticed a large change in its appearance and immediately informed the physician. He ordered a CT scan which showed the hip dislocation with an infection into the joint. Amber greatly helped in the care of this patient. The patient knew her from his previous visits and trusted her caring for him. Her assessment of the wound totally changed the course of his care. He was immediately started on IV antibiotics and soon transferred to another facility.
