Tuesday January 3rd was an exceptionally busy night in MICU. The unit was bustling- new patients were being admitted and acuity was high. Amanda had 2 ICU patients, one patient was a new admission, and both patients needed to go to MRI that night.
One of her patients had delivered a healthy 39 week old baby the day before and was admitted to MICU with possible eclampsia. Amanda took this patient to MRI and despite knowing the multiple tasks she needed to complete upon her return to MICU, asked her patient if she would like to stop at the nursery to see her baby. The patient was alert, and understood how busy the unit was that night, and was genuinely impressed that Amanda thought of this visit. She graciously agreed and escorted her to the nursery. Her patient had not yet started breastfeeding, and was able to spend a few minutes with the nursery nurses learning about breastfeeding and setting up a schedule to breastfeed. The breastpump arrived in MICU shortly thereafter and the patient had a successful start to breasfeeding. Despite having a very hectic night, Amanda had a great spirit of teamwork and camaraderie.
Having transferred to MICU in June 2011, Amanda has been a refreshing addition to the MICU team. Her contagious energy, enthusiasm, and drive to learn is impressive. She is consistently hardworking, and has a great smile! She is regularly commended by her patients and families for going the extra mile, and is highly respected by the MICU Team.
