Amanda was on duty when a pregnant mom presented with a pregnancy that had been deemed to be stillborn. This new Mom was angry, obviously grieving the loss, and became hateful to Amanda. It was a struggle for Amanda to continue to take care of this patient as the day went on. She called her manager to discuss options and eventually decided she was strong enough a nurse she wanted to stay with the patient and care for her at this very distressful time.
It is a testament to the professionalism of this nurse that she was able to provide the care the patient needed, under extremely difficult circumstances. As with many nurses, Amanda was facing some life challenges of her own at the time. Many of us find ourselves in difficult situations with patients and our own emotions and stress are again aroused. Amanda rose above her own personal dilemma to continue to be the caregiver and summoned the patience and strength to handle this patient's needs.
Amanda is a leader within the department and always strives to meet the department's needs, no matter how demanding, while maintaining patient advocacy at all times. Overall, Amanda represents holistic nursing care that demonstrates the core values of Saint Joseph Mount Sterling.
