Amanda Harrington is not just a caring nurse, she's also a great mentor, leader, and coworker, who really is a shining star on 2 West. I have been working with Amanda for over 2 years; I witnessed her transition from night shift to day shift, from a floor nurse to a leader everyone loves. Amanda as a nurse always provides the best care possible to her patient, from bringing in water, taking them to the bathroom to bring pain medication, she always attends to her patient's needs right away.
Amanda's also very sensitive to patient's feelings. I remember one time she requested a room change for her patient because her patient overheard the diagnosis for the roommate and started feeling uncomfortable to stay in the same room. Amanda sensed the patient's feeling and advocate for him immediately. After we moved the patient to a different room, both the patient and his daughter were in tears and said, "Thank you so much, this means a lot to us."
Amanda is good at dealing with difficult patients and situations, she will seek all kinds of resources to solve the problems before it gets worse. She will initiate apology and provide service recovery and calm down the patients which most of the times will work.
As a leader, Amanda has been in her clinical coordinator and charge nurse relief role for about two years. She's such an excellent role model, she would sacrifice herself to accommodate other people's needs. Last Sunday at the shift change, one of our patient's bathroom flooded, Amanda took actions right away, called the team to work together, called service, moved patients out, provide service recovery.
Later, we found out that she was not feeling well that day, but she did not tell anyone. Amanda has been precepting student nurses and training new grad nurse for 2 West, she's a great mentor. Instead of telling the answer, she would encourage nurses to use critical thinking and look for the answer. She will patiently spend time with them and coach them without pressuring them. Amanda is such a great asset to 2West and to our organization, I do not hesitate to nominate her for the DAISY award!
