My wife passed away at UPMC Shadyside hospital. When 911 was called, she insisted on being taken to Shadyside although we live minutes from Jefferson Hospital. The EMTs question her request but told her they would make it to Shadyside.
In the emergency room, she was fine, other than very high blood pressure. But then suffered a brain aneurysm, which we were told was massive, and there was no hope. She was then moved, where she survived approximately 30 hours.
While she was there, she received the absolute best care by all the nurses. They were exceptionally empathetic to all our family members. We were continually offered assistance and amenities. But there was one nurse who was beyond exceptional, Alyssa Miljus. Without going into all the details, she melded into our family and hurt along with us although she did not know us. Along with her sincere compassion, she effectively and efficiently did her job and cared for her other patients. Alyssa is a special person and our family will not forget her. Now we know why my wife insisted on Shadyside Hospital. She just knew the high standard of care she would receive, how the family would be taken care of, and that someone like Alyssa would be there. We cannot be more appreciative of everything that was done by all.
