...I walked in to my patient's room and saw Ally in there. I double checked my assignment and then found out that she was there as a sitter for my patient. For an RN, to be a sitter... this is a real challenge. My patient was confused and wanting to climb out of bed. For those of you that know Ally she has gone through a lot in her life... yet she comes in to work with a smile on her face. On this particular day when faced with this challenge at work, she chose to make the most out of the day and chose to be there for my patient. She immediately got into her "Super-Nurse Care Bear Mode" and shampooed my patient's hair, gave her a thorough bath first thing in the morning, got her up to a chair and sat beside her all day long. They did exercises, went back to bed and back to the chair and advocated for her to get tea in her ice cold swabs. The patient had a very specific way that she wanted things done and Ally had it down. She used a little HOT water to steep the tea and then poured it over ice cubes, and then gave her the swabs-one every 15 minutes! She truly listened with her heart when speaking to the patient and to the patient's sister (who was a retired Pediatric nurse) giving her updates and reassuring her and the patient. Allyson chose to make the best out of the situation. She made everyone's day! Mine, my patient's, and also my patient's sister.
