R is a 16-year-old patient in the PICU. He has Duchenne's muscular dystrophy and was admitted for respiratory failure from RSV bronchiolitis. Throughout his stay, Allison has been a primary nurse of his. It is widely recognized among staff members that Allison quickly became a favorite nurse for R. Both R and his great-grandmother have expressed their gratitude for the exceptional care Allison has provided. The grandmother has commented on her "dedicated, helpful and caring" demeanor, and R has spoken about how she takes good care of him and makes him feel happy. During the trying times of determining the care R will receive in his current condition, Allison volunteered to speak privately with him, as he has consistently shown a high level of comfort in opening up to her in conversation, which was not common with most of the staff. Considering the duration of time she has provided care for him, her extensive knowledge of his current condition, as well as R's natural taking to her, those who attended the ethics meeting concerning this topic agreed that Allison would be the most qualified to speak with R. Now, as they prepare to send R home to continue care and comfort, Allison has been diligent in educating family members, including creating a binder of instructions with photos she has taken of equipment, helping make the transition from hospital to home as smooth as possible. It is clear that Allison has shown the utmost quality of care and compassion for R and his family, and they have expressed their desire for her to be recognized for her heartfelt care for him by going above and beyond what is required of her. She has made sure R's voice has been heard, his needs have been met, and that he has been cared for in a respectful, loving manner.
