I have recently had the medical necessity to have two separate procedures performed at the MUSC Heart and Vascular Center in the Ashley River Tower. In retrospect, I was very fortunate to have had the same nurse assigned to me both times. Her name is Allison. After going into the back of the department for the first procedure, I met her and she introduced herself to me. She explained who she was and what her role was going to be in this entire intimidating procedure. I was immediately impressed by her very professional attitude and friendly demeanor. She made me instantly feel as though I was not in a strange place for some horrific procedure, but amongst friends for aid and assistance. Over the next hour or so, she guided me through the procedures of preparing for my procedure and informed me clearly of each step she and the other medical personnel were performing as they accomplished these tasks. I was also impressed with the dignity aspect of her and the remainder of the staffs' performance. It is sometimes hard to retain your dignity in hospital settings and I understand that. She, and they, all allowed me to retain as much as could be expected and more.

Allison is clearly taking special attention to ensure that the patient actually understands the information, and she has even gone so far as to give the patient suggestions on how the patient can change her diet (and how to cook the suggested items) based on what the patient and her family already enjoy eating on a regular basis. Allison has gone above and beyond to make a difference for this patient, and I wanted to share this with you. Her ability to work with patients of all ages in the unit and her effectiveness knows no age bracket. The feedback I receive from her patients has always been positive and glowing. Her practice is centered on making sure each and every patient receives the exact care they need with a smile and true concern. But what is also staggering and worth mentioning is how the efforts of one person, one particular person, can truly make a difference in a patient's life. Allison approaches her work in a caring, competent manner that is also motivating. She is inspiring to watch in action as she makes difficult tasks appear easy because of her approach to her work.
