From one RN to another I would like to express my, and my family's deepest gratitude to Alice. Not only did she take excellent care of my father she took care of his family- beyond what her typical nursing duties were. As nurses, we are trained to do extended care to families, but Alice went above and beyond her duty. My father received the worst news of his life. This cancer will rob him of watching his grandchildren grow and he will miss future grandchildren coming. This news was, of course, devastating to the whole family, but especially to his wife. They met as teenagers and have never looked back. My mother refused to leave his side. It was four days before I could get to the hospital- I live a distance away. By the time I got to the hospital mom was out of clothes, not taking her medicine, not taking care of herself. Alice offered to take my mother's clothes home and wash them for her. Mother was resistant, but I encouraged her to let this kind nurse help her. Alice took my mom's clothes home, washed and folded them and brought them back to her on her day off. She also gave mom a bottle of lotion and a composition book with a pen so she could write down her thoughts- this is beyond what her job is and she should be recognized.
Alice truly cares for her patients- I recognized that very quickly. This unit and this hospital are fortunate to have her as an employee. But most of all the patients are the most fortunate. God bless you Alice for all that you do for your patients - you are touching lives and making a difference- and that is what a nurse does.
