Alexis Lamie has a giving heart that has allowed her to make some of the most genuine and honest connections with patients and has allowed those around her to strive to do the same. I have recently witnessed two examples although I am confident that there have been many more.
D was a very special patient in our unit. As her treatments progressed it was apparent that she would not be one of the patients who go into remission. Alexis demonstrated a very special relationship with D and thought about her often. On one occasion, Alexis was found on the unit, flowers in hand and in street clothes. We asked why she was here on her day off and Alexis advised she had come to visit D and bring her flowers. Alexis gives of her own time to benefit others.
Another instance the unit was caring for a very ill patient who due to the nature of her treatment would have to spend her birthday in the hospital. A week ahead of time, Alexis started talking to other people about the need to do something for her very special day. She was able to start the process of organizing her colleagues to make a special moment. On the day of the patient's birthday, Alexis was on the unit with a gift in hand along with a Gigi's cupcake and candle. The patient was able to blow out a candle on what could potentially be her last birthday.
This is quintessentially Alexis. She takes her time and her own money to do the small things that matter. The flowers when a patient is down, the ability to see ahead and prepare for a patient's special day. She freely gives her own time and resources to better the lives of patients that she serves. For this reason, I would like to nominate Alexis Lamie to receive this distinction so that she may know her actions are so very important and make a difference in the lives of her patients and colleagues.
