Abbey is not only an excellent nurse, but a conscientious educator. She was assigned as a preceptor to me during my role transition at Bethesda North. Abbey is able to apply and demonstrate the nursing process and theories as an educator. She has been excellent at orienting me into a nursing role. As her student, I was able to observe how Abbey takes pride in her career and the patients she cares for. Patients feel confident while in her care and optimistic about their well-being. Abbey allows her patients to express their concerns as she empathizes with them. All in all, Abbey can balance being an educator and nurse while providing excellent patient care.

I would like to nominate Abbey for the DAISY Award. Abbey recently took care of a patient that had elective surgery. On one of the first post-operative days, the patient became progressively confused with post op delirium. Abbey was very concerned about the patient and notified the medical MD. Abbey administered Librium according to the AWA protocol, but the patient continued to increase in agitation and combativeness. Abbey was concerned about the patient’s safety and the safety of the patient’s spouse as he was very agitated with his spouse. She notified the MD of the need for a higher level of observation due to the change in condition, the physician grudgingly ordered a transfer to ICU. The physician did not feel the patient warranted such a high level of care. As the patient’s primary RN that was actually in the room dealing with the patient, she displayed a strong understanding of clinical ability and judgment. She advocated for the patient and herself by understanding this patient needed to be in a higher level of care and took on the wrath of the physician to make sure this happened. The patient eventually transferred back to the floor and Abbey continued to check with the family and the patient even though she was not assigned. She did the right thing by the patient and the family was very appreciative of her skill, caring and advocacy. She is an asset to our patients, families and organization.

Abbey you are a ray of sunshine and a thorough, compassionate nurse. You brightened up my dad’s face, even through his delirious state. Your care and human spirit helped to heal him. I was most impressed that you came to check even when he wasn’t assigned to you.

Abbey was an excellent patient advocate. She had been caring for a patient for several days in a row. Upon arrival on the third day she immediately noticed a mental status change in her patient. She contacted the physician who disagreed with her about needing the patient transferred elsewhere where he could be better monitored. With the best interest of the patient in mind, she boldly stood up the physician and did not give up until the patient was transferred to the ICU where he could be monitored closely so he was not of harm to himself or others. His family was very thankful and appreciative of her standing up for their family member. Abbey risked the wrath of a physician and put her patient and their family first. She is always honest, patient and caring first for her patients with nothing but their needs first.
