Yesenia is committed to the JPS mission of service and education. She recently was a key RN planner for the GYN Cancer Awareness in September of last year to education JPS team members on the potential silent killer of Ovarian cancer. She believes many of our staff, as well as patients are not aware of the signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers and dedicated much time to working with her team to create a "knowledge fair" in the hopes of getting staff to pay attention to their own wellness related to women's cancers and the risks.

Over the holidays we had a patient who was dying with cervical cancer. Yesenia asked me if the staff would be able to adopt the family. There were 4 small children. She approached the patient to ask if the staff could provide gifts for her children. In talking with the patient, she found out the patient had not been able to get her husband a gift for the past 5 years and did not have adequate shoes. With her leadership, she used our unit holiday tree to put tags for what was a potential gift for each family member, both clothes and toys for the children. This included a gift for the patient to give to her husband. Just before the holidays, Yesenia delivered these gifts to the family with two other staff members. This is just one example of the way she demonstrates the caring heart with which she delivers her nursing care.

She demonstrates a clear understanding of the mission. This extends to our patients, their families, her peers, and even our resident staff. When there is a patient issue, she is persistent and utilizes the chain of command when necessary. She does this in a nonconfrontational manner as a team member focused on the patient. She is the recipient of many WOWs and has been mentioned in discharge phone calls. She is especially good with end of life, fetal loss, and newly diagnosed cancer patients.
