My husband was seen in the ER, due to severe pain in his shoulder and loss of feeling in hand. PA ordered MRI of shoulder and brain. Wendy was our nurse and after observing my husband's movements as well as listening to what he was saying, Wendy spoke with the PA and asked him to include an MRI of the neck as well as shoulder/brain. Had Wendy not been so completely aware, listened to what my husband was saying and watching his movements, we most likely would have been sent home with maybe a muscle relaxer. Instead, the PA listened to Wendy and had the MRI done on the neck. Long story short, my husband was diagnosed with C6-T1 Posterior disc protrusion with moderate compression of the spinal cord. He was taken from the ED to SW Medical Center where he ultimately had spinal surgery then a couple of days later and was discharged a week later. Wendy listened, cared, and was our advocate (when we, at the time, didn't know we needed one) to ensure that all avenues were reviewed. We were so surprised that she spoke up to the PA, that the PA listened AND that the PA was the one that told us it was Wendy's idea to have the neck looked out. My husband might not have full feeling in his hand yet and is still recovering from the surgery, but we have NO DOUBT, he would be far worse off, had Wendy not stepped up. She is caring, thoughtful, patient and made us feel cared for. We landed in the ED again a week or so after the surgery and we were fortunate enough to have Wendy for our nurse. She spent time with us, explained things to us and treated us like we were her only patients of the day. She is a true asset to your hospital and to the entire nursing/medical community.
