Wendy called me one afternoon to tell me about her day. She had been asked to assess a staff member who was having pain in her lower back and feeling light headed. Wendy went to assess her, BP cuff in hand and recognized that this teacher needed immediate medical attention. She called 911 and continued to support the teacher. The teacher had started complaining of a funny feeling in her throat and progressively worsened to the point that she could not use her legs by the time EMS arrived. Wendy made sure her husband was aware and sent another staff member who was the teacher's best friend in the ambulance with her. The teacher had an abdominal aortic aneurysm and was in surgery for nine hours that night- extremely lucky to be alive. Wendy continued to follow up with the family during her stay at VMC and is hopeful that the teacher will be able to return to school. Wendy really did go above and beyond for this teacher and her family- providing not only care in the immediate emergency but emotional support for her throughout her recovery and also for the school staff who were traumatized by the event and concerned for their co-worker and friend.
