Our father was transported to BTMC from Health South. Dad had suffered complications from a procedure that was performed at another non-Banner hospital. He never recovered completely and once he was discharged from the other hospital and admitted to Health South, his condition quickly deteriorated. Within 72 hours, he was taken to BTMC in very critical condition.
It was quickly evident by the ED physician treating dad that he was in the final hours of his life. Our father did not want his life prolonged by artificial means and we granted his wish to pass peacefully. The compassion and care we received by your staff was praiseworthy. One of the nurses was Violetta, who, in addition to all the medical personnel we came in contact with, gave remarkable compassion, respect, and dignity.
It was apparent that our family was grieving the anticipated loss of our father and they went out of their way with kindness. Human kindness and human touch means so much to a grieving family. Violetta arranged for some snacks to be delivered to our dad's room so that we did not have to leave his side for one minute. Never in all our years have we seen this type of kind-heartedness. She continued to check in on us while we were waiting on Hospice to arrive, offering any assistance she could. Once dad was discharged from BTMC and admitted to hospice, he passed away quietly with us by his side that evening.
Violetta definitely understands that being a nurse is more than just administering medication and caring for the patient. It's also caring for the patient's grieving family.
