Valerie is a MICU nurse who exemplifies Integrity, Accountability and Excellence. When she is on duty she is fully engaged with her patients, her peers and her surroundings. She is constantly thinking and a master at preparing for the “what ifs”, such as: What if this patient suddenly gets worse? What if we get several simultaneous admissions? Do we have enough infusion pumps for admissions? And, what if there is a hurricane and the power goes out? Valerie’s also has endless energy and a true passion for nursing. Recently, at the end of shift as charge nurse, we received a patient from another hospital who suddenly became critically unstable. During the Code Blue, she calmly supported the staff, helped everyone maintain a focus on the patient and on the priorities of Airway, Breathing and Circulation. After helping to lead the resuscitation in the MICU, she accompanied the patient and the assigned RN to Interventional Radiology for an emergent procedure. In Interventional Radiology, she was instrumental in helping obtain all the supplies and equipment the patient and the radiologists needed, often hurrying back to the MICU (two buildings away) to obtain items. Valerie stayed four hours after the end of her 12-hour shift, knowing that she was the best resource to procure the needed supplies and equipment when time was of the essence. She even thought ahead to order a First-Step air mattress overlay for protecting the patient’s skin since he was so unstable that he would not be able to be turned upon return to the MICU. Valerie’s experience, efficiency, wisdom and dedication are truly deserving of the Daisy Award for extraordinary nursing care.
