Our 5 year old son is a St. Jude patient and has been hospitalized at Mercy four times since September. Recently he spent eight days in the hospital due to a fever. During our stay we had the privilege of being cared for by multiple nurses who were kind, compassionate, and professional but one stood out above the rest: Tyler Schweizer.

From the time we met him, Tyler has continuously provided exceptional care to B and our family. He always displays a light-hearted and welcoming attitude when he enters B's room. Throughout the nine months since B's diagnosis, we have crossed paths with many healthcare professionals; Tyler is one of the best! He exhibits each of the DAISY qualities and deserves recognition for his willingness to go above and beyond, which makes him an outstanding nurse.

Tyler constantly makes the effort to learn about B and what he likes/dislikes. He found out B really likes to listen and dance to Michael Jackson music. One day Tyler stopped by after his shift and visited with B for 45 minutes. Walking into the room he asked B to teach him some Michael Jackson moves. At this point B had been stuck in the room for five days; he was bored and his spirits were low. But when Tyler showed an interest in him, B's mood perked up! He climbed out of bed and gave Tyler a dance lesson. By the time it was all done, both of them were sweating, B was smiling and his mood had significantly improved. As his parents, this extra touch of compassion meant so much.

Because we slept on the little couch every night, we came to know we could rest if Tyler was our nurse. When we started B's journey, St Jude's Research Hospital taught us to administer meds through his port and how to keep his line free from infection. After doing this for several months on our own, our eye is trained to notice detail. We so appreciate Tyler's close attention to that same detail when caring for B to prevent further illness or infection. If we had questions, we were comfortable asking Tyler because we knew he would actively listen and find the appropriate answer for us.

Our family feels Tyler is well deserving of the DAISY Award because of his welcoming attitude, willingness to listen, attention to detail and all of the mentioned kindnesses he demonstrates day in and day out for children and their families on the 7th floor. Thank You Tyler.

Tyler is the nurse that admitted my daughter M. He was so respectful and caring, and he helped us with anything we needed. He gave outstanding care to M and always asked if we needed anything too. Thanks Tyler, you are going to make an outstanding father someday!

This past summer I was in the hospital for appendicitis. Tyler was my nurse; he always came into my room with an enthusiastic and uplifting manner. I also appreciated his great nursing care and that he had an attitude I could relate to. He even visited with me when he was not the nurse assigned to my care that day.
