Being a single mom with an active toddler at St. Jude is not an easy task. In fact, it is overwhelming, stressful, and daunting. From the first day I met Trish, I knew that my little boy was receiving the best care possible and that helped relieve some stress. Trish was always compassionate to both my little guy and to me - nurturing us both with the guidance and wisdom necessary to prepare for the marathon we were preparing to run.
Attempting to teach a single mom how to flush lines and change dressings while a two year old is chatting incessantly and itching to move is a skill that Trish has mastered. She immediately became best friends with my son and skillfully managed to teach both of us about dressing changes and flushing. Not an easy task. She was a constant cheerleader and a relentless advocate for my son and for me.
When mentioning Trish’s name to the other nurses, immediately they say, “I know Trish, she is great!” or something to that effect. They know her enthusiasm, professionalism, and love for her job. I cannot imagine St. Jude without Trish. I think the memory of my son running down the hall with his arms wide open for a hug from Trish pretty much exemplifies why I am nominating her for the DAISY award. In my mind if a two year old loves a nurse THAT much – she must be doing something pretty spectacular… and indeed she does!
