A 26 year old woman, who was perfectly healthy a week ago, came to the ICU from the Medical floor when she was unable to move. She was suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome. She could no longer manage her own airway and was going to be intubated within the hour.

Tim was at the bedside to help the nurse with this transfer. He explained to her exactly what was going to happen and what to expect during this next hour. He made sure to have her parents come in to the room while the other nurses were getting the supplies, medication, and the room ready for the emergent intubation. Tim explained to the parents what to expect and why this intubation was necessary for her. Just before the procedure, Tim made sure that she told her mother and father she loved them and allowed them to give her a kiss before having them leave the room.

She was intubated and would end up requiring a tracheostomy while the family waited for her Guillain Barre to resolve. She was on the ICU for 21 days before she was able to transfer to long term acute care facility. She is still not able to speak.
