Throughout our mother’s stay at Kaiser Hospital, Santa Rosa, we were grateful for many health care professionals that supported her “comfort care”, however, Teresa demonstrated exceptional compassion, care, and support that is deserving of the DAISY Award. When we saw the DAISY Award brochure, we all agreed that it would be a way of sharing appreciation for the positive difference she made for our mother and our family during this difficult time.
Teresa’s compassion was demonstrated in many ways. She was attentive and listened carefully to our questions and ideas for ensuring our mother’s comfort and well-being. She treated us as members of the “Comfort Care Team”. Family members were with our mother at all times, and she encouraged us to be there. Primary was her attention to our mother but she was observant to our needs as well.
Our mother showed an allergic reaction to the pain medication. Teresa was relentless in her search for ways to alleviate the itching and maintain the relief from pain. Teresa coordinated that care with the doctor and stayed with us (even though her shift had ended) until the allergy was relieved and a new medication could be used.
Teresa shared our priority for ensuring comfort and dignity while dying. We will always be grateful for having a nurse with the expertise to eliminate discomfort and for her compassionate care of our mother and family. Under very difficult circumstances, Teresa treated us as family with warmth, respect, and empathy.
